Preston Boyd Moss
Preston Boyd Moss

P. B. Moss was born September 28, 1863, in Paris, Missouri, the son of David Hickman and Melville Hollingsworth Moss. He attended the public schools, and graduated from Kemper Military Academy in Booneville, Missouri, with honors in 1883. He attended a year at Harvard University and finished a year at Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, New York. After leaving school, he worked a short time for his father in the bank before purchasing a chain of lumber yards.  In 1892 he located in Billings, Montana.

Mr. Moss became very prominent in banking, organized the first dial telephone company in the area, founded a newspaper that was a forerunner of the Billings Gazette, started a central heating plant and the Billings Utility Company. In association with H.W. Rowley, Mr. Moss developed the Billings Light and Water Power Company and the Northern Hotel. He assisted other prominent local citizens, such as I.D. O'Donnell, in development of local irrigation, the sugar factory, and the Billings Polytechnic Institute (now Rocky Mountain College). In the early 1900's, Mr. Moss and T.A. Snidow ran 80,000 head of sheep bearing the Moss-Snidow brand and several thousand head of cattle.

P.B. Moss unsuccessfully ran as the Democratic candidate for Congress in 1922. P.B. was also the promoter of a futuristic city called Mossmain, which was to be built approximately 10 miles west of Billings. The plans for Mossmain were drawn by one of the most brilliant architects and city planners in the world, Walter Burley Griffin. But, when the war years reached here, P.B.'s beautiful plans for his city dwindled and died.

Mr. Moss was a prominent Mason of Montana, a grand commander of the State Knights Templar, affiliated with the Billings Consistory and Algeria Temple of the Majestic Shrine at Helena, and served as a trustee of the school district. He start a toothpaste factory using bentonite, and a meat packing plant.

Preston B. Moss died February 1, 1947, after suffering a heart attack, he was 83 years old. He and his wife are interred in the family plot in the Mountview Cemetery.

Martha Ursula (Mattie) Moss
Martha Ursula Woodson Moss

Mrs. Martha Ursula (Mattie) Moss was an artist, pianist, and mother of six children.   Born in 1863 in Missouri she traveled along the Oregon Trail with her family when just over a year old. At 16, she returned to Missouri to attend the Baptist College, where she graduated. She studied art at the St. Louis Conservatory. On June 5, 1889, Mattie married Preston Boyd Moss, son of David Hickman Moss of Paris, Missouri. They came to Billings, Montana with their two children, Woodson and Kula, December 12, 1892. Two more children, Melville and Preston B. Jr. were later born at their residence on South 27th street in Billings. The fifth child, David, was born in an apartment where the former Hart Albin Building is now located. The last of the six children,Virginia, was born in the Mansion in 1903.

She was a charter member of the Edna Hedges Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, chartered in 1898. Mattie was a charter member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Billings and served the church as a reader and as a practitioner. She was the first woman in Billings to drive a car, she "was deviled to death with everyone wanting a ride," Melville commented.

The children thought P.B. was stern and Mattie was fun. Their children nicknamed her "Fun." Mattie and P.B. Moss celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 5, 1939. Mattie died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage on November 6, 1951, at the Mansion. She was 87 years old. Many of her oil paintings hang in the Mansion and examples of her china paintings are displayed as well.

The oldest son, Woodson Jackson Moss, born in Paris, Missouri, on April 17, 1890 attended school in Billings, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, on June 23, 1909, and then attended Yale University. He returned to Billings and began his career in ranching. He married Abbie Deckert Cunningham of Forsyth, Montana, on December 17, 1929. Woodson operated his cattle ranches on Pass Creek in Parkman, Wyoming and in the Garvin Basin in Montana.  He died at age 79 on May 21, 1969.

Kula Moss Arnold
Kula Moss Arnold

The second child, Kula Moss Arnold, born December 29, 1891 in Paris, Missouri, came to Billings with her parents in 1892. Kula is an Indian word meaning "pretty bird." She attended school in Billings before studying at Roger's Hall in Lowell, Massachusetts and Dwight School for Girls in Engelwood, New Jersey and attended the Semple Finishing School in New York City. One of her roommates in school was Margaret Porter, the daughter of the author known as O.Henry. Kula and Melville homesteaded in the Garvin Basin in Southern Montana before Kula married John Bingle Arnold on January 11, 1923. They made their home at 137 Clark Avenue.  Their only child, John Bingle Arnold, Jr., died at age 7.  Kula died of a heart attack at her home on May 30, 1958 at the age of 66. Many pieces of her furniture were brought to the Mansion to replace pieces that had broken or were later removed. Several quilts and needlepoint items which Kula worked on are also in the Mansion.

Melville Hollingsworth Moss

Born on January 26, 1896, P.B. and Mattie's third child, Melville Hollingsworth Moss was a musician. She was first introduced to the harp at 9 or 10 years of age and studied under Martha Buchanan, one of the first music teachers in Billings. She also played the bass and the piano. After graduating from Billings High School in 1914, she spent four years in the New York area while studying at the Dwight School for Girls in Englewood, N.J. Traveling abroad was Melville's favorite past-time. She preferred to travel by ship and took fourteen cruises, including two around the world, two around Africa, to the Far East and the Orient, and a trip to Europe with Kula and two more voyages around South America. At seven years old, Melville moved into the Mansion and lived there until her death on November 2, 1984, nearly 82 years later.  Melville never married.  It is due to her protectiveness and care that it has been preserved so nearly intact.

Preston Boyd Moss, Jr.
Preston Boyd Moss, Jr.

The fourth child and second son, Preston Boyd Moss, Jr. was born in Billings on January 13, 1898. He graduated from Billings High School and also attended business school here in Billings. During World War I Preston Jr. served in the Army Medical Corps, but he never saw action. His troop was crossing the ocean when the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, so the ship turned around and came home. Preston worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad and Pullman Services from 1924-1965, when he retired. He married Minnie Anderson of Murdock, Minnesota, and built a home at 2511 Longfellow. They had no children. Preston Jr. died on August 21, 1971 at 73 years of age. Minnie died in Billings on January 1, 1988.

David Hickman Moss III
David Hickman Moss III

David Hickman Moss III, Mattie and P. B.'s fifth child, was born in Billings on February 8, 1900, attended Billings Public Schools before enrolling in Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire in 1918. In 1920 he entered Yale University where he studied for two years before coming back to work on his brother, Woodson's, cattle ranch in Parkman, Wyoming. David later operated the Moss Implement Company in Billings, selling farm implements, until his retirement in 1956. He married Marjorie Powers in Hardin, Montana in January, 1929. They had one daughter, Marilyn Castleman, of Arizona. David died August 28, 1958, at 58 years of age. The Preservation Society purchased the Moss Mansion from Marjorie Moss and her daughter, Marilyn, and Preston's widow, Minnie Moss.

Virginia Moss

The sixth child, Virginia Moss was born in the Mansion on February 14, 1903. At five, Virginia died of diphtheria on April 2, 1908. Because of her sunny disposition, her brothers, sisters and playmates considered her their favorite. She was beloved by all.

The Moss Mansion Historic House Museum.
Step into history with a one-hour guided tour of the Moss Mansion Historic House Museum.  The tour captures early turn-of-the-century life as the Preston Boyd Moss family lived it. Visitors see original draperies, fixtures, furniture, Persian carpets and artifacts displayed in the 1903 red sandstone structure. Designed by the New York architect, Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, designer of the original Waldorf Astoria, Plaza Hotels, Williard Hotel, and Copely Hotel. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Moss Mansion has been included as a chapter in the book Great American Homes, published by Reader's Digest, on the A & E Network program on America's Castles entitled Frontier Castles, and in the National Geographic Guide to America's Great Houses.

The Moss Mansion is operated by the Billings Preservation Society, Inc., a non-profit organization.

I thoroughly enjoyed my second visit to the mansion this week.Too bad more Billings residents have not looked at a truly Montana treasure. It makes the Winchester Mansion in San Jose look like an outhouse. The Moss family deserves a special honor for their part in the preservation of this part of Montana history.

I was just looking over your web site and I was fascinated by the information I found. I had the privilege of touring the mansion when I was in high school. I used to live in Billings and every time I went by that house I always had to stare at it because it fascinated me so much. My father spent most of his childhood in Billings and new the last Moss that lived in that house. So he told me what they were like. I was glad when I finally got an opportunity to tour that house. I really enjoyed it.

thanks, VJ

What a delight to find this site! Several years ago when my husband was a child, his family used to visit at the mansion when it was still a Moss family home. His father is the nephew of John and Kula Arnold and spent a great deal of time in Montana as a young man. (My husband's paternal grandmother was sister to John Arnold.) It is great to finally see pictures of the house I had only heard about. Thank you for the (tiny) slice of his family history. Best regards, Mrs. Ivan Arthur Parry, Jr.

The part of Moss Mansion I like was all the neat stuff that was in the house was the same thing that they had is still there and like it is brand new like they didn't even use any of the stuff like the dress in Mattie and Kula's closet and all the stuff in the bed rooms like the guest bed room the bed hasn't even touch it at all. Then the living room they just paint the day before Virginia moss died and living room some people said that they could hear the voices of the kids and the parents yelling and screaming all over the house and all the clothes were like they haven't even been worn and all the beds haven't been slept in yet.

We have recently visited the Moss Mansion while in Billings for the ABC bowling tournament and were very impressed with how the mansion has been preserved and restored. The tour was given by a lady named Joy who seemed to really know and love her job! We just wanted to let people know what a treasure you have in Billings and highly recommend a tour of this wonderful place. Rich and Tess Senborn Campbell, Ohio

I once visited the Moss Mansion when I was young and a member of a local Girl Scouts club back in the late 80's. I remember the house had a huge impact on me and so did the stories of the family, even at the young age I was. I still have vivid images of certain parts of the house in my mind. It was just like yesterday!

I was born in Montana and raised in the Lockwood area until I was around 9. I went to the Lincoln JR High school downtown Billings and walked by the mansion everyday on my way home. As a kid the mansion was a place that was spooky, mysterious and made the hair on the back of our necks stand on end. As an adult it is a beautiful site, no longer spooky but still very much mysterious to me. My husband and 12 year old daughter have never been there but I am planning a trip there for Summer 2004, I look forward to seeing the big house, now on the inside as well as the out. Dear Moss Mansion Staff, We liked seeing the inside of the Moss Mansion. We have driven by it a lot and have always wondered what was inside. The harp, the toy trucks, the sleigh bed and the dolls were awesome. The movie was cool. Thank you for the tour. Love, Mrs. Neujahr's Kindergarten Class at Morin Elementary School Christopher Corbin Christian Joshua Naomi Codie

I've enjoyed reading about the the Moss family and the Moss Mansion history. My mother and I toured the Moss Mansion last evening on the "Murder Mystery" tour. This was my third tour through the mansion and enjoy it each time through and am glad this part of history is preserved. XXXX
